Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)
This is a procedure that can be done for cosmetic or medical purposes. As we age our skin begins to lose its volume and definition. The collagen that once gave our skin its youthful structure and smooth look begins to diminish causing wrinkles to form, skin to sag, and fat deposits are slowly pulled down by gravity. This loss of skin elasticity combined with diminishing tissue volume results in sagging skin on both the upper and lower eyelids causing wrinkles, bulges, and sometimes even problems with eyesight. The sagging skin on the upper eyelid can cause sagging over the eye itself obscuring the vision of the patient. On the lower lids, the weight of extra skin and decreased tissue volume causes the eyelid to droop. In addition to this a layer of fat serves as a cushion between our eye and the skeletal socket. As we age, this membrane often loosens and weakens allowing the fat to protrude and bulge out around the eyes. Eyelid surgery can help to correct these issues giving the patient a better field of vision as well as a more youthful and rested appearance.
