Different Types of Hair Loss
This is the most common form of hair loss. It commonly presents in men as a receding hairline and thinning at the crown of the scalp. In women it commonly presents as diffuse thinning over the crown of the scalp and spares the frontal hairline.
Androgenic alopecia is caused by a genetic predisposition and hormonal changes.
Treatment is focused on treating the root cause of the hair loss with natural supplements, over the counter or prescription topicals, or oral prescription medicines.
This is a sudden, diffuse shedding of hair.
This can be triggered by stress, illness, surgery, childbirth, rapid weight loss (such as with GLP-1 medicines for weight loss), or other medications. It usually begins 2–3 months after the triggering event.
Treatment involves identifying and removing the trigger, nutritional support, patience and reassurance (in self-limited cases). Platelet rich plasma (PRP) injections can be helpful to stop the hair shedding and encourage new hair growth. Depending on the root cause of the telogen effluvium your doctor may recommend natural supplements, over the counter or prescription topicals, or oral prescription medicines.
Autoimmune hair loss presenting as round patches of hair loss on the scalp or body.
Treatment options include intralesional corticosteroids (steroid injections) into the affected area, topical over the counter or prescription medicines.
Underlying medical conditions such as iron deficiency, Vitamin D deficiency, zinc deficiency, and thyroid disease (hypo- or hyperthyroidism) can lead to hair loss. As part of your work up, your doctor may order blood work to determine if you have an underlying health issue leading to hair loss.
There are different causes of scarring alopecia. Your doctor may be able to diagnose this based on the presentation of your hair loss, or a skin biopsy may be needed to confirm the diagnosis. The different types of scarring alopecia include:
- Traction Alopecia caused by chronic tension or pulling (tight hairstyles like braids, ponytails).
- Central Centrifugal Cicatricial Alopecia (CCCA) thought to be due to a combination of genetics and styling practices.
- Lichen Planopilaris & Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia which are inflammatory scarring alopecias.
Overview
Platelet rich plasma (PRP) can be an effective treatment solution for hair loss, using your OWN growth factors. When injected into the scalp, the platelets become activated to release multiple growth factors, which promotes hair growth.
Procedure
At the start of your procedure, your blood is drawn — typically from your arm — and placed in a centrifuge (a machine that spins rapidly to separate fluids of different densities).
After about 10 minutes in the centrifuge, your blood will have separated into in three layers:
- Platelet-poor plasma
- Platelet-rich plasma
- Red blood cells
Finally, the platelet-rich plasma is drawn up into a syringe and then injected into areas of the scalp to stimulate hair growth.

Recovery
It is unnecessary to make many changes to your plans after your treatment with the exception of avoiding aspirin, Advil and alcohol. It is normal to experience some mild soreness and, rarely, some swelling. Not all individuals experience this side effect, but it can occur. Immediately following the procedure, your scalp may feel sore and tender. Gently apply cold compresses to alleviate these symptoms. To help even the distribution of the PRP mixture, massage the scalp for a few days after your procedure. Following these instructions can help expedite proper healing.
Results
Results are typically noticeable after three to four treatments, which are performed every four to six weeks. A touch-up treatment is often recommended for maintenance every six to 12 months.
